AI-Assisted Manufacturing vs. AI Manufacturing

Generative AI is divided into two categories: Gen AI-Powered and Gen AI-Generated content. In Gen AI-Powered content, the user creates the content themselves, but AI is used for editing, error checking, or development. In Gen AI-Generated content, the primary creator of the content is AI.

Briefly

If a student or researcher is considering using Generative AI applications in their work, it's important to understand the difference between Gen AI-Powered and Gen AI-Generated. Students may be allowed to use Gen AI for support purposes, but they are not allowed to use it to create the work.

For example, in its new policy for Kindle authors, Amazon requires publishers to declare when submitting their works whether the content is “generated” or “assisted” by AI.

The key difference between the two is the extent to which humans are involved in the final output. Gen AI-powered content has a greater human involvement, while Gen AI-generated content has a lesser human involvement.

Generated by Artificial Intelligence

We define Gen AI-generated content as text, images, or translations generated by an AI-based tool. If you generated the content (text, image, or translation) with an AI tool, even if you made significant edits afterward, it is considered "Gen AI-generated."

If a Gen AI tool is the primary producer of the content, then the content is considered AI-generated.

Examples:

  • Print a book review from scratch or answer an essay question with a Gen AI app.

  • Asking Gen AI to create a picture of a red robot sitting on the Moon.

Gen AI – Powered

If you created the content but used Gen AI-based applications to edit, improve, proofread, or enhance the content (whether visual or text), that content is considered “Gen AI-powered” but not “Gen AI-generated.”

You can also use a Gen AI-based tool to generate new ideas or brainstorm concepts. However, if you ultimately created the text or images yourself, this still counts as "Gen AI-powered" and not "Gen AI-generated." You don't need to provide any acknowledgement for using such tools or processes, but you should always cite the source.

If a Gen AI tool was used to enhance, filter, modify, or improve student or user-generated content, it would be considered “Gen AI-powered.”

Examples:

  • Asking a Gen AI app to convert a photo to black and white.

  • To have him check for spelling errors in a document.

  • Asking them to change the passive verbs in your writing into active ones.

A table with comparative examples:

Gen AI Powered Generated by Gen AI
Topic Selection and Refinement Students provide Gen AI with prompts and criteria containing suggestions, and the AI then suggests potential topics or refines existing ones. AI chooses a topic without any suggestions or input.
Images Asking the Gen AI app to convert a color photo to black and white. Asking Gen AI to create a picture of a red robot sitting on the moon.
Planning and Drafting The Gen AI app creates a draft by organizing the notes prepared by the student. The AI creates a draft by organizing notes not written by the student (e.g., notes provided by the instructor or lecturer).
Manuscript/Book Writing Gen AI makes suggestions for variations on a theme the author has created. AI writes the entire manuscript from scratch.
Editing/Reviewing Gen AI suggests changes to improve tempo or structural adjustments. AI is asked to rewrite a book to improve its pacing or structure.
Editing/Proofreading Gen AI suggests changes to convert passive verbs to active verbs. AI translates the student's text from their native language into English.
